Jumpstart Leadership Coaching

Jumpstart Coaching is a short, focused, one-to-one coaching experience designed to help you gain clarity and confidence—quickly. Through five, one-hour sessions confidential sessions with an expert coach, we’ll help you to build strengths, tackle your challenges, and achieve your goals.

An Ivy League university wanted to support new department chairs who go through a steep learning curve as they transition into their leadership roles. ALG created the “Jumpstart” coaching for them. Now in its fourth year, with two universities participating, it has impacted 10s of chairs, easing their transition, enhancing their self-awareness, collaboration skills and time management contributing to long-term success and greater engagement in their roles.

A leading scientific research institute partnered with the Academic Leadership group to develop and deliver a customized six-month program focused on developing skills to excel as lab leaders and mentors. The program combined 1:1 coaching, in-person leadership development workshop and mentor-supported goal alignment. Outcomes included both individual impacts including a more positive mindset, proactivity, and new tools to navigate the complexity of their roles. It also impacted team performance enhancing communication and collaboration.

A program chair and his senior administrator identified a need to help support faculty as they assumed larger leadership roles within the university. We designed a customized 1:1 leadership coaching program, focusing on individualized, strengths-based development and leader-as-coach and developer of post-docs. Topics of exploration included leadership styles, managing multiple priorities (teaching schedules, publication priorities, managing a team), long- term individual vision, and being an authentic leader. Program participants reported greater role clarity, increased ability to lead others, a feeling of momentum towards relevant publications—and being able to sleep better at night. This program is now in its sixth year.

Women in engineering and STEM academia face underrepresentation in leadership roles, with only 13% of department heads being women. SWE aimed to address this gap by equipping women with leadership skills and fostering their professional growth through a leadership development program called ALWE. The Academic Leadership Group (ALG) partnered with SWE to design and deliver a leadership coaching component for the ALWE program. This component was tailored to the unique needs of women in engineering and STEM fields, focusing on enhancing self-awareness, building leadership skills, and fostering a supportive network among participants.
